July Favourites Events On Thursday 4th October, ConsultingTools are hosting a one-day workshop on Emotional Intelligence in London. The workshop will be run by our Chief Psychologist and expert on the topic, Dr. Mark Slaski. If you interested in further details of the event or in booking a place, please do get in touch. Interesting websites Once again, the BBC website proves to be a very useful source of information. This month, we thought you might be interested in reading the BBC article on why psychometric assessment should become part of the UK driving test. Read the article here. In the News This month, we would like to direct you towards an article in TrainingZone written by our Chief Psychologist, Dr. Mark Slaski. The article looks at how, 10 years after its emergence, emotional intelligence has become an integral part of improving business processes within an organisation. To read the article, click here. Did you know...? According to a survey of UK office workers, a lack of control over workspace design is associated with high levels of stress, job dissatisfaction, absenteeism and staff turnover. Those who have little input take on average nearly twice as many sick days. The explanation given is that a lack of control reduces employees' identification with their managers and the organisation as a whole. The study has shown that those in offices decorated with plants and pictures work faster and feel much more comfortable than those in undecorated space. When employees are given the opportunity to design their own space, performance and well-being are improved even further. However, if workers' own spatial arrangements are over-ridden, productivity and well-being fall sharply. What is more, they are 80% more likely to experience "sick office syndrome", believing that the office air is contaminated and complaining of headaches! Does the latter ring a bell?! Just for Fun We are halfway through the year, and your New Year resolution of losing weight and getting in shape is already history. If burning calories sounds a little too much hard work, you will be pleased to know that there is an easier, less traumatic way of burning calories AND getting paid while you do it- it is called work! It has been found that we burn 400 calories while we are asleep, so think how many calories we burn simply by going to work and checking our email. Take Dr. Gupta’s Calorie Quiz to find out. Send us your score and the person “burning the most calories” (no cheating, please) will receive a goodie bag. Forthcoming Accreditations If you want to become accredited in either Thinking Styles or Facet5, we are running accreditations on the following dates: Facet5 26-27 July 2007 14-15 August 2007 5-6 September 2007 Thinking Styles 18-19 September 2007 13-14 November 2007 To book a place, email us.
