Interesting facts

Swearing at work can ‘cut stress’, according to a study by the University of East Anglia. Whilst using four-letter words in front of the boss is normally frowned upon, managers should in fact encourage staff to swear at work as it boosts team spirit. The researchers have found that profanity can be an emotional release and an effective way of fostering relationships between employees.

Whilst the use of bad language in front of senior staff and customers should be seriously discouraged and even banned, in certain circumstances it could promote solidarity among colleagues and express frustration, stress and other feelings. However, the academics did highlight that abusive swearing should not be encouraged where it increases stress rather than relieves it.

Interestingly, employers at lower levels and female workers were more likely to swear within the workplace while younger managers were found to be more tolerant, suggesting that age might be a key factor as far as acceptance of taboo language in the workplace is concerned.
